The subs at Surfs Up are fantastic. The pizza us good but not great. I prefer the cheesesteak and Italian. The bread makes the subs great. Legend has it that Surfs Up gets their bread daily from a bakery in Philadelphia. I don't no if that is true, but it sure has that original Philly taste.

Very casual take-out/eat-in place specializing in subs. Pizza is made on-site. You can watch. I haven't had it recently so I can't say how it tastes. I went there this past weekend and it is just as good as I remember it as a child. The italian sub is perfection. Great beach food.

Hours are incorrect. Not open at 9 am. Drove from Ocean City on way home and wanted to stop but can't. No website either. Wtf.

5-star cheesesteaks, especially if you get them N.J.-style (sauteed onions, cheese, ketchup and hot peppers only). O face. I even stopped by on my way home from the beach and bought 2--1 for the car and 1 for home later that night. AND I NEVER EAT IN MY CAR. CHEESESTEAK TORNADO ALL UP IN MY AUDI. Do you see how serious this is? P.S. The pizza is average, 3 stars. Normally I deduct a star for Pepsi instead of Coke, but these cheesesteaks are heaven.

This place was packed. Solid food, huge portions. Small subs are $9 for 11 inches, Large is $14 for 18 inches. We added a pizza as well. Keep in mind that are two places to order. A pizza line, and a everything else line. We had the kids go stake out a table upstairs and lines and food prep was about 15 minutes. Being that day after July 4th, it's probably not usually that busy. The food is 2.5/3 stars, location is great and price is satisfactory. You can do much worse at the beach (hence the four stars instead of three).

First off, great cheesesteaks so let's get that out of the way. They are creamy and delicious on their bread. That being said when you are at the beach you just don't want any hassles. There were a couple of things that caused me issues. First at the beach it's hot. I have 2 kids and they wanted water. You'd think after spending $30 you could get a water cup but no I was forced to buy bottled water for $2. That rubs me the wrong way. Second, for cheesesteaks and fries you need ketchup and with 2 crazy kids the last thing I want to do is spend time opening packets. Charge me more and let me waste ketchup. So with a few tweaks this place would be a 5 but as is I had to give it a 3.

Delicious cheesesteak sub, fresh veggies , generous amount of meat and sweet peppers on the freshest bread. Yummy! Greeted by very friendly townies. Really good old fashioned beach joint.

It's a lot less elaborate than Grotto's Pizza, but the pizza here is still pretty good. The toppings on their pizza aren't rubbery or slimy, which is a plus. There's a lot more seating than you'd think, with two stairwells leading up to a second-floor seating area. In addition, the people who work there are pretty nice; they seem to be friends with a lot of the locals, from what I picked up. They also offer pickup, which is pretty popular. Overall a good place to get pizza, with better food and a smaller crowd than Grotto's down the street. Probably the best pizza on the parkway.

Went here based on yelp reviews. Was not disappointed! My son had a slice of pizza and liked it. I got the cheesesteak. Incredible amount of meat and overflowing with toppings! I ordered it with "everything" but it's a good thing he asked me what I wanted (I started wondering why he continued asking my topping choices, I mean I SAID everything didn't you hear me?) because there were toppings I wouldn't have gotten! There were so many! So I was schooled!LOL:). It was the small size, I think 11", and I could barely finish half it was so huge. After a very disappointing cheesesteak at capriottis last week this was amazing. I knocked off a star for cleanliness and also because all I wanted was a glass of water and was told I couldn't have one because they ran out of "water" glasses (at 1 o'clock in the afternoon). Seemed like a pretty lame excuse, could've just given me water in a Pepsi class. Also they were out of 2 of their 8 fountain drinks. The stools and counters were greasy, dirty napkins and straw covers on floor, and 3 employees just stood around talking behind the counter. They were nice and polite though when I asked where the book store was.

How could I have missed out on the delight of this place for so long? Oh probably because it looks like a semi-scary dirty little dive but the food is actually great. My turkey sub was amazing. I tore it up. Half a sub was almost enough. The whole thing would have been stomach exploding too much. All of our large party enjoyed their food and some had leftovers for leftovers. The one person who had a slice gave me a bite and it was good. As in beachy pizza good, not wood-fired gourmet good. Certainly better than Grotto and, on my next beach visit, I will schedule in a pizza night and pick up a pie from Surf's Up. Unlike some beach joints, this place is crowded but worth it.

The PLACE at Bethany for steak and cheese subs. The large is HUGE. Toppings are free (woot woot). And they slave in the heat making it fresh in front of you. Worth the price and worth the calories.

Hey, want to have the worst sub ever? Try Surf's Up! Ordered from a gaggle of teens who had no idea what was going on and guess what? My order was completely wrong, and really - how hard is a veggie and provolone sub with everything? Apparently too hard for this shop! No tomatoes, no onions, no O&V, and on a stale sub roll with ONE slice of Provolone cheese....and for 8 dollars?? Same as a turkey hoagie? What did I just pay for?? Do yourself a favor and go a block down to Capriottis for a sub, you wont be disappointed. PS - They roast fresh turkey at Caps, namely why I did not odrder Turkey at Surfs Up, I would rather just have veggies rather than processed deli meat...but Surf's couldnt even get the veggies right! Aak!

There's no place in Bethany that holds a closer place to my heart when it comes to childhood memories. It's remained more or less the same since I went to Bethany as a kid. Pizza is better than Grottos, in my opinion. Subs are great too. Only downside is its cash only, so be sure to run to the ATM before going. This place at times gets dinged for being the "old run down pizza place" but to me that's the charm. It's a quintessential beach-pizza shack.

    (5)
  • Jaimee A.

The place is beyond disorganized. The staff doesn't know how to make change and aren't particularly nice, but that being said, they make a mean hoagie! We had the meatball with provolone and veggie with provolone. Both were great!

  • Alex S.

Not sure if my tastes matured or if this place's quality went down. But, the burger I used to love was no where near as good as it used to be. My wife was not impressed with the pizza either; that's not to say it wasn't worth trying.

BEST subs on the beach!! The cheesesteak is fantastic. The Italian cold cut sub is huge. No way you could make one at home for that price. family has been going there every day on our vacation. Nobody would think of going anywhere else.

  • Phil A.

I've been coming here for nearly 31 years now, and it's just as delicious as ever! Quality sandwich and fries!!! You take credit cards now too!!! Can I give you six stars?! Please never change. It's a staple, and truly a highlight of each trip to Bethany.

All in all a solid option for food that is good enough in Bethany. Average cheese steaks at best, but at 18 inches you can easily serve two to three people so there is value. The place is very popular so be prepared to wait.

  • J M.

Went for the first time today. Only tried the pizza which wasn't great but decent. Service was quick and the place was clean. One odd thing I noticed was one of the employees running his hands over and over through the shredded cheese for the pizzas. Didn't seem like the most sanitary thing to be doing. Would like another option for the subs other than the "small" which is 11". A 6" sub would be greatly appreciated.

The best place for subs in Bethany by far. Surf's Up is far better than Subway and any other place with subs or pizza in town. They have great steaks, italians, and they always pack on a ton of meat. The fries are also tasty and their pizza is hand-made every day and I find it better than Grotto. It's not the cleanest or visually pleasing in the world but it has great food and atmosphere if that's what you're looking for. P.S. - get there early before the lunch rush comes in or be prepared to wait a bit for your food.

The best cheese steak I have ever eaten! I have probably eaten 50 of them in the past 10 years. Whenever I'm in the area, I try to make it there and have another, and wash it down with a birch beer. Way better than the cheese steaks from Philly, Cheese-wiz is gross. The artwork on the walls is made by a local painter, and they are quite cool. Friendly staff. It is cash only. I've only ever had the cheese steak, so that is all I can rate.

It's been 2 years since I've been back to one of my favorite sub shops (vacationed in Bethany Beach every for 40 years, so I have a long history with Surf's Up-so in love with their subs when they opened) and was surprised by: 1. $39 for 2 large subs (1 steak & 1 turkey) 2. We hadn't ordered a steak sub, it was supposed to be a large provolone cheese sub but the teen taking our order got it wrong and wrote it down as a steak & cheese without cheese, so my vegetarian mom didn't get to eat 3. Turkey sub was a soggfest 2 stars because had we eaten it there, and not picked it up on our way to Rehoboth, we could've had them fix my mom's sub & the roll of the turkey sub likely wouldn't have sogged through but subs are one of those to go lunch items, especially at the beach. Management needs to step up their game, big time!

  • Benjamin W.

I've been here a few times previously, and Surf's Up has not disappointed at all. I've gotten the Italian and Turkey subs here and they were both great. They use good quality meats, and churn out sandwiches rather quickly with an assembly line style of sandwich making. There is a separate portion for pizza making, but I have never needed to use it because the subs are so good!

    (5)
  • Kelli D.

Fairly impressed by this little place. Got the cheesesteak and the only reason I did not give five stars is it could've had a little more cheese and the roll should've been lightly toasted. Service was good, they were friendly and quick. Will definitely be back.

  • Omar B.

The pizza from surfs up is okay. Also it is a HUGE slice of pizza! The price is really good compared to other places like Grottos. Surfs up is not far from the beach so there is no need to get into a car.

We've been going to Bethany for over twenty years and just decided to stop in (mostly because of the Yelp reviews). We had a couple slices of cheese pizza and it was excellent! The crust was perfect! We also got an Italian Sub which was huge! The roll made the sub! We'll be back!

  • John J.

Great Cheesesteaks and Subs/Hoagies, I've been coming here for years and it never disappoints. I miss it over the winter when I can't get my fix. Subs are huge, meats are terrific, and the rolls (a critical but often overlooked component) are fantastic. I usually get the Cheesesteak or the Turkey, but the Italian is also great. I like the pizza as well - it's nothing special, just good mom & pop takeout style pizza (if that makes sense).

    (5)
  • Miyuki L.

The cheesesteaks are great here and I will admit thats all I have had here... I love this place and it is always a must go to. I will admit the employees can be a little out of touch with customer service but it is a beach/tourist area where we all know is not the same customer service unfortunately. The cheesesteak totally makes up for it.

    (4)
  • Mary Fletcher J.

The cheesesteaks are really good. I was goofing around in this picture, but this is the SMALL size! I split it with my boyfriend. I have also gone here for slices. It was fun talking to the friendly surfer dudes who work here.

  • Chris D.

4 1/2 stars is what I would rate it. (Need more cheese on the cheesestakes) We ate here twice while at Bethany. First time we had pizza, chicken nuggets and fries. They even made the pizza half cheese and have white pizza to satisfy all my picky eaters. This was a 5 star visit. Second visit we had the same , but added a few cheesestakes. They were good , but very light on cheese which was not mixed in and only right against the bun. We even heard another customer wonder if they had cheese at all. This was a 4 star visit.

  • M R.

Not the best cheese-steak I've ever had, I think that sign should be removed. I am from Philly, and I admit, I am a bit of a cheesesteak snob... so.... other people may be impressed by the cheesesteaks here... The only thing I really liked about this place is the meat on the cheesesteak is actually QUALITY MEAT. It's hard to find that in a cheesesteak. But, the steak has no taste. The cheese didn't really melt all up in it and combine well at all. - Not impressed by anything else. - Place is kinda dumpy looking. - Pizza is terrible. - Free refills on sodas, but "no free water cups"... $10 steak should entitle me to some water. - Bread rolls need work... It is the only place in Bethany that sells a cheesesteak... so they have that monopoly going for them! Sorry guys.

  • Seth L.

Grottos isn't great pizza, but it's a tradition from many years of coming to Rehobeth, Dewy and Bethany. figured I would try something new. Pizza tasted like it was out of a box. fries were a little better, but with Thrasher's next door (legitimate fry kings) why bother?

    (2)
  • Jason S.

Pizza is decent which doesn't mean much for Bethany Beach but it is he best that I have had in BB. Their subs however are excellent. I have not been disappointed anytime I have satisfied my cheesesteak craving at Surfs up.

Great cheese steaks! Best I've had so far at bethany, dewey, or ocean city! I'm not a fan of the pizza.

  • Meghan O.

Had a turkey and cheese sub for lunch today. These subs are the real deal. Great bread, good lunch meat, and tons of toppings. Even when the line is long, it moves pretty quickly. And come on people, there's a line for a reason: it's the best sub shop in town. Cheesesteaks and italian are also good and can't go wrong with the pizza. I generally just get it to go and eat on the beach. They take credit cards now which is nice. Oh and clean bathroom to use.

Read the reviews and four of us tried a pepperoni pizza. Probably the worse pizza I ever ate. Should have tried the cheesesteaks I guess!

    (1)
  • Karl B.

Top notch hoagies! The right kind of bread, best quality meats, fresh toppings. I'd give them 4.5 stars except you can get equally good hoagies at Al Casapulla's a few miles away on Rt 26 in a sit down restaurant with some ambiance. No ambiance at Surf's Up but great hoagies at the beach, it hardly gets better than this.

Surf's Up? More like the rest of the mid-Atlantic in the summer time..Surf's down! Went to this place this past weekend with original intentions to get a 12" pizza and the much talked about cheese steaks. First I stood infront of the stoner behind the counter as he stared at the cash register trying to do i don't know what..i had yet to order anything. When stoney-balogni finally acknowledged me, I asked for the 12" in which he said, "oh we don't do 12" any more just 16"...wanna do that, just a couple bucks more," nope thats a big za for a personal pan (for the kid), "I'll just do some slices," i said. Another 2 minutes staring at the register and stoner #1 looks around and rings me up. Next thing ya know i see his partner in crime stoner #2 start to roll the dough for a pizza for the slice..This is at 12:30...at luch.. ya don't have some slices ready right in the middle of the day! really! In the mean time I hear from the sando line (yea you can't order their much talked about cheese steaks ordering from the same stoner you have to go to a different stoner (talk about a stoney set up)). So i look over at that line and they looked even more stoney and the main guy (who i guess was in charge but not in charge of much) kept saying to the guys making the sando's, "don't worry about it, nope don't worry about that, or that, or that," is there anything ya worry about except your next toke break. Sooo decided to skip it and went next store to that sandwich shop that does the po-boy (awsome BTW) and they hammered out a fired oyster po-boy and fries in no time, I went back to check on stoner#1 and 2 and they were still working on my slices. 10 minutes later i don't even get a, "sorry for the wait bro," and stoner #2 slaps my 3 slices on plates with no, "umm bro ya want a box for these," or anything and sends me on my way with 3 very lame fresh slices (crust sucked, cheese was standard costco brand and the pepperoni was flavorless). Surf's Up is like the surf in most of the mid-Atlantic...Surf sucks. Take another hit Surf's Up!

People seem to rave about their cheese steaks. IMO they are decent but nothing spectacular. But for Bethany they are are good. I prefer Louie's in Rehoboth. However, their pizza is pretty solid, their tuna is delicious as well. I have tried must of their subs and they are all good. Billy (the owner) is a great guy as well

Waited forrrrevar for my one slice of pizza, but still was pretty good. But 3 dollars??? That's alot for one slice..

If you are looking for a good cheesesteak in Bethany Beach, this is the only stop. Call ahead for take-out, especially on weekends and bike over to pick them up. All the subs are loaded with meat. One of the few must eat places for lunch after a good morning on the beach.

  • JJ C.

I can't believe I'm the first to review Surf's Up! Pizza or cheesesteaks, it's 5 out of 5 every time, which is pretty much once a day when I'm at the beach. I'm not from Philly, OK, so don't jump down my throat when I say this, but these are the best cheesesteaks I've ever had by a long shot. Now I wonder why all cheesesteaks aren't this good. The only problem is, while the pizza is great too--way better then Grottos--I'm so into the cheesesteaks that I can only order pizza if I've already had a cheesesteak that day. But what a nice problem to have!
